One lucky winner won a mountainous £25,000 from a 50p stake on the 49's numbers betting game - but that whopping windfall only tells half the story!

Stricken Peter Smith, a retired carpenter from Kent, had been rushed to the hospital for a heart operation, after falling ill in the early hours of Saturday morning. Mr Smith awoke hours later eager to find out whether it had been a success or not - it had been - before he got the news from his wife of almost 50 years that they had landed a 50,000/1 shot!

Winnie Smith, who doesn't drink or smoke but likes a small flutter every week, placed a 50p bet on the successful draw. She chose hot numbers 2, 8, 13, 24, and 32 - all of which hold significant meaning to her - at a Betfred Shop on Blackfen Road, Sidcup on Friday, the night before Mr Smith's dramatic episode.

Mrs Smith told Betfred that upon hearing the 49s results, she couldn't wait to tell her husband the good news: "With all the COVID restrictions, I couldn't visit him, but I knew when I did speak to him by phone on the recovery ward I knew I would be able to cheer him up with the news that we were £25,000 better off."

The couple joins a long list of 49's big winners and plans on celebrating their landmark anniversary celebration in style, with a VIP cruise to the Caribbean or the Maldives.
